Scientists have noted that the images of infrared radiometers, which all modern meteorological satellites are equipped with, show the World Ocean as a complex system of thermal inhomogeneities. Aqua is one of these satellites. It includes six unique instruments, including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
This installation is a mechanism that allows the viewer to interact with data from space. The main algorithm is driven by data from NASA’s website, for which MODIS records daily how thermal fields change and move.
MODIS breaks down each ocean surface temperature image into pixels, runs through them, and converts them into numerical coordinates and RGB bands. The results are presented on a display and a thermal printer, as well as converted into algorithmic sound compositions.
